Every October, Bone and Joint Week helps get people thinking about one of the most widespread and pressing health issues of our times – musculoskeletal health or bone health and the role of each of us in improving it.
- Osteoporosis is also known as “the silent crippler” because we usually don’t know that we have it, until it’s too late. Unfortunately, in many cases, the first real “symptom” is a broken bone.
- In South Africa, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will possibly develop this disease within their lifetime – which means potentially between 4 and 6 million South Africans suffer from Osteoporosis.
- There are many misconceptions about osteoporosis, for example that it is “an old woman’s disease”when, in fact, bone loss in women can begin as early as the age of 25.
- Furthermore, new studies have shown the prevalence of osteoporosis in men is higher than previously thought with approximately one in five men affected.
Musculoskeletal conditions are the number one cause of severe long-term pain and physical disability worldwide affecting hundreds of millions of people. Bone and joint conditions include back pain, arthritis, traumatic injuries, osteoporosis, childhood conditions to name a few and many people have more than one condition. Musculoskeletal conditions can affect people of all ages, including children. If not treated appropriately, musculoskeletal conditions can hinder daily activities such as working, walking, climbing stairs, cooking and personal hygiene.
Taking action to improve the way we deal with the health of bones, joints and muscles is important so that we can tackle the enormous impact of musculoskeletal conditions on people and society. Doing so helps people live well, independently and actively.
This year, #BoneJointWeek kicked off on 12 October and incorporates world awareness days including #WorldArthritisDay and ends on 20 October with #WorldOsteoporosisDay.
